THe Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon in southern Iceland is a photographers’ dream world. There are so many possibilities for photographs, and the glaciers create their own weather patterns, so often the area is dramatic and full of potential in that regard. I was fortunate that on this night the sky lit up with fiery rays of light that blended perfectly with the cool tones of the water and ice. It was a memorable moment for sure, one that I feel blessed to have captured with my camera.

Southern Iceland has so many iconic areas to photograph and some that aren’t iconic at all like these cliffs near Dyrhólaey. On our way from a wonderful night of photography in the area we happened upon this area. THe reflections and black sandy curves made it an easy place to stop for photography. THe clouds, light, and mood was perfect and I ended up capturing one of my favorite recent images.

Oregon has every type of landscape possibility I can think of. Some of my favorites are the rugged mountains around the town of Bend. Mount Bachelor is a popular recreation stop for winter and outdoor enthusiasts of all sports. On this evening thunderstorms rolled in over the area causing dramatic light around the mountain. This shot is from a nearby wetlands area that was perfectly still and allowed for pristine reflections of the stunning sunset and mountain.

Olmsted Point in the Yosemite National Park highlands offers spectacular granite lined vistas that include the famous Half-Dome. Recent fires helped create a dramatic sky, and filter the warm glow of the evening sun. Seeing places like this is what makes landscape photography worth the effort, and long days. This shot was created using a 400mm lens to create compression in the layers of granite and allow half dome to take over the scene as it often does in Yosemite National Park

Glacier Bay Alaska is a remote section full of smokey fjords, wildlife, rocky mountains, and as the name implies, glaciers. Sitting in the safety of a boat watching house size chunks of the glacier fall into the sea was awe inspiring. THe sounds and power of these living rivers of ice is amazing. The overcast weather, which is common for Alaska made anything overly dramatic impossible but the closer more detailed shots were fun to grab and really showed the cracks and colors of these huge pieces of ice.

Eastern Florida doesn’t have much in the way of rocky, rugged coastline but Blowing Rocks Preserve near Jupiter, Florida is unique and has some of the best and most interesting rock formations in the state. These rocks have been twisted and turned from years of wave and wind abuse. Some of the rocky ledges are sharp enough to cut. This area was the closest I’ve ever come to losing camera equipment. The waves hit these shelves with more force than would appear to the eye…and I came very close to being swept off with all my gear. Luckily I held on tight and with the exception of a few water droplets on my gear and myself I escaped with some nice images.

I love exploring the farm country of the Palouse in eastern Washington State. With the old rustic barns and pieces of Americana it’s a landscape photographers paradise. The shades of green and gold are beautiful to see from any angle. Every now and then a lone tree will emerge and create an image that realyl stands out above the rest. This reminded me of the paintings of surrealist Rene Magritte.

Cape Kiwanda is a rugged area of sandstone cliffs and pounding surf. Waves here during certain times of y ear reach 30-40ft in height or larger. It’s stunning to witness. On this night the tide was out and the powerful waves were minimal and I was able to get out onto a shelf where I found this hole filled with sea anemones. Being that this area is highly photographed by other landscape photographers I was happy to find this area and grab some different images from what I had seen previously.
